It’s been a few seasons (seven; who’s counting…) since the Leafs have made it to the playoffs, but they nonetheless have a long and proud (and on occasion illustrious) NHL playoff history.
I started watching them in playoff action when I was the tender age of 5, back in the spring of 1958. I lived through and have long-since relished the playoffs they participated in every season afterwards until they missed the spring festivities in 1968—the season after they won their last Cup.
Playoff success has been infrequent and incomplete since that golden early-‘60s era, yet there have been some wonderful moments, for sure.
Here are some playoff stories I’ve posted since the inception of Vintage Leaf Memories, some about that ‘60s ‘hey-day’, others more recent but still memorable.
If any of the stories catch your fancy, click and take a moment to stroll down memory lane…
-How my visit to Church helped the Leafs win a key game in the 1962 finals against Chicago
-Jim Harrison's overtime goal against the Bruins in the spring of '72
-Dave Keon's huge Game 7 against the Habs in April of 1964
-how the Leafs came this close to upsetting the Flyers in 1977
-Bob Pulford's classic double-overtime winner against Montreal in Game 3, 1967
-Wendel Clark's huge hit against San Jose in the 1994 playoffs
-How Bobby Baun became a Leaf hero and legend against Detroit in 1964
-Non-Leafs, but one of the great playoff series of all-time- Bobby Orr and the Bruins against Jean Beliveau and the Habs in 1971
-A classic series between the Rangers and Leafs in the spring of 1962
-Playoff highs and lows for ex-Leaf Jim Pappin
-when Montreal missed the playoffs in 1970
Some stories to hopefully ensourage Leaf fans as we wait for new playoff memories that will be created come next April.
